L is for Learning Commons!
On your way to your video production class in the M2 Studio perhaps you have noticed a new poster hanging in the upper floor of the Library just past the Reference section. Did you look up the infamous Helvetica font? Maybe you were drawn to the silky roundness of the Cooper Black font. This new poster, “Periodic Table of Typefaces: Popular, Influential, & Notorius,” was created by designer, Camdon Wilde at Squidspot and is being provided as a reference tool for our MMDP students and all those interested in typography.
Maybe you are asking yourself: what other resources does the Learning Commons provide on the topic of typography?
Well, let me tell you.
In addition to this brand new poster, we also have a virtual bevy of typography resources linked up on our Learning Commons page. Among them:
- Periodicals
In addition to Metropolis, HOW, ID, Eye, Cabinet, CMYK, Computer Arts, Creativity, Print, and Wallpaper we also have electronic subscriptions to critical periodicals with current information on the current uses of typography in contemporary design. Look for publications included in ProQuest, EBSCOhost, and JSTOR by going into the publications areas within these research databases.
- Print and Media in the Library
Many typography print resources can be found through our Library Catalog. This includes books in print, periodicals, electronic books, and multimedia (DVDs, Video). There is also a resource list in the Library Catalog of just typography resources and can be accessed when you click here.
And don’t forgot Helvetica, the DVD you may have been required to watch in one of your classes.
- Additional Resources
Through the Learning Commons you can access some of the fantastic typography resources that are featured on the Art and Applied Design page. This includes Typographica: A Journal of Typography, TypeCulture, Typophile, and We Love Typography.
And if you love, love, LOVE typography these are some terrific resources for learning more.
One more thing — if you truly LOVE typography then check out the linked video below, F is for Fail by Brent Barson. Watch as type converges and collides to create mood and action and a great exercise in typography!
Keep typing!
